A Wolf Burner in Lexington That Clicks Forever — Reading the Symptom

The question that halves the problem

Count the affected positions before you touch anything. If one will not light and the others behave, the fault lives at that position — its cap, its ports, its electrode. If none of them light while the appliance clicks away happily, the common elements are what remain: the spark module, the earth path they all share, or the gas arriving at the appliance. Those two branches barely overlap, and guessing which one you are on wastes an afternoon.

Do it methodically. Turn each position to its lighting setting in turn, count slowly, and write down one of four outcomes: lights normally, lights late, clicks with no flame, or nothing happens at all. Also note where the sound comes from. Many appliances fire every electrode from one module, so a chorus of clicking from across the top when you turn a single knob is designed behaviour rather than a symptom.

Keep one pattern in a category of its own: clicking that carries on with every knob in the off position. Nothing in the mechanical sections below explains that, and it is dealt with further down.

Lexington kitchens make the local half of this worth mentioning. In East Lexington the renovations tend to keep the original footprint, so a wide cooking appliance is a close fit between cabinets and gets pulled out rarely, which means spills at the back of the top go unnoticed for longer than anyone would like. Up on Meriam Hill, where kitchens have generally been enlarged, the same appliance may sit under a long hood run and see much heavier use. Both end at the same place: what is on and around the burner is usually what changed.

The mechanical checks, which are most of the answer

Even on a page about the electrical half, honesty requires this section to come first, because most single-position failures are mechanical and you can clear them yourself in a few minutes. The cap has to sit fully down on its seat and in its correct rotational position; a millimetre proud alters the path the gas takes as it leaves the crown, and a spark in perfect health will not catch it.

With everything cold, lift the grate and the cap. Look for rock when you press an edge, and check you have not swapped caps between positions during the last clean — they are not always interchangeable, and one in the wrong place produces exactly this complaint. Reseat it and try again before going further.

Ports next. A boil-over bakes onto the crown and seals the small openings from the outside, and gas that cannot leave evenly cannot be lit reliably. Use a soft brush, then a thin non-metallic pick on any port that is still blocked, working from the outside and never pushing debris inward. Nothing metal: widening or scoring a port changes how that burner runs long after the immediate problem is gone.

Damp is the last mechanical item and the reason so many of these calls arrive the day after a thorough cleaning. Water across the electrode suppresses the spark’s ability to light gas until it has properly dried out, and a head or cap reassembled while still wet will click and refuse for a while. Dry everything, leave it in a warm room, and re-test before drawing conclusions.

The electrode: position, cleanliness and cracks

What you want to see is a tight blue-white arc jumping from the electrode tip to the earthed metal of the burner head, in the same place every time, with a crisp snap to it. Turn the kitchen lights down and watch. A spark that wanders, looks feeble, or lands somewhere other than the head is the fault even though the appliance sounds entirely normal.

The ceramic around the electrode is the part to examine closely. It is an insulator, and when it cracks the high voltage takes the easier route to earth through the crack instead of across the intended gap. The module still fires, the click is still confident, and no ignition energy ever reaches the gas. Hairline damage, a chip at the base, or a dark carbon track running down the white body all say the same thing.

Surface contamination behaves similarly. Cooking residue and grease bridge the gap or spread the discharge into something too diffuse to light anything. Clean the electrode cold, gently, with a dry cloth or a little alcohol, and leave the geometry alone — bending the electrode to change the gap is a repair that usually turns one component into a replacement.

The general rule underneath all of this: a click proves that high voltage is being produced somewhere. It proves nothing about where the energy landed, and nothing whatever about whether there is gas at the burner to receive it.

The supply side of the question

Some of this you can check from where you stand. Do other gas appliances in the house work normally? Was there recent work on the meter or the service, or an interruption on the street? Is the appliance shut-off, usually behind or below the unit, standing fully open rather than half turned from a previous visit?

What is not a check is going round the fittings with your nose. Smell is an alarm and it has exactly one correct use: if you smell gas and it does not clear, get everyone out and call the gas utility from outside the building. Not us, not after one more test.

Past those visible items, the supply side needs gauges. Manifold pressure, whether a valve is opening when it is commanded to, and whether an orifice matches what the appliance was set up for are all measurements, and the tools and the gas-side work are where the homeowner stage ends.

The burner that lights with a thump

A delay before ignition means gas has been escaping into the room during the pause and then lighting all at once. That is the thump, and it deserves quicker attention than a position that never lights at all — because a burner that does nothing is inert, whereas a burner that lights late has been accumulating fuel every time you use it.

The causes are the ones already covered: an unseated cap, ports partly closed by residue, a weak or misdirected spark, or moisture that has not fully gone. Work through the cap, the ports and the electrode in that order, then watch the arc in a dim kitchen to see whether it has changed character.

What does not apply is any attempt to compensate on the gas side. Increasing flow to overcome a slow light feeds the exact condition producing the thump. If the delay survives a careful mechanical inspection, it goes to the Range Repair side of the business rather than round the cleaning loop again.

When the electrical side is the answer

The module is a small high-voltage generator. When a switch tells it a knob has been turned toward the lighting position, it starts producing pulses and sends them to the electrodes, and it keeps producing them until the switch tells it to stop. Everything it does is triggered by that signal, which is the key to the symptom this article is named for.

A switch that no longer opens leaves the module permanently instructed to fire, and the result is continuous clicking with every knob off. It is not the burner misbehaving; it is a switch stuck in the closed condition, often because liquid found its way behind the knob and dried there. The same fault can also present as a position that never triggers the module at all, which is the mirror image.

This is where the reader hands over, and not out of caution for its own sake. Diagnosing it means access to the switches behind the control panel of an appliance that is also carrying gas, with a meter, while establishing whether the module or its wiring is at fault. There is no version of that which belongs on a kitchen counter.

The symptoms that mean stop now

Once more, first and plainly: if you can smell gas and it lingers, get everyone out of the house and telephone the gas company from the street.

After that, three things end the DIY stage. Delayed ignition that is still there once the cap, ports and electrode have been properly dealt with. Continuous sparking with everything switched off. And a burner that catches and then dies back on its own: that one is about flame supervision, and no amount of brushing will touch it.

It started right after I cleaned the range. Why?

Three causes account for most of these. Water left across the electrode suppresses ignition until it has fully dried. A cap put back a fraction out of position — or on the wrong burner altogether — alters the flame path. And cleaning fluid can carry residue into ports that were already partly closed. Dry everything properly, check the seating, and re-test before deciding a component failed.

The burner keeps clicking even with every knob off.

That is a switch fault rather than a burner fault. The module fires because a switch is telling it a knob has been turned toward the lighting position, and a switch stuck in the closed condition — often after liquid found its way behind a knob — leaves that instruction permanently in place. It will not clear itself. Turn the appliance off at the breaker and call, because the sparking is continuous.

Can I clean the ports with a pin or a paperclip?

Use something thin and non-metallic instead. Metal scratches, widens or deforms the opening, and a port that has been enlarged changes the way that burner runs long after the original blockage has gone. Work from the outside and never push debris inward. A soft brush deals with most of it; a wooden toothpick or similar handles the stubborn ones.
